I know this holiday can be hard for some, but I’m proud to say that with or without a significant other – this day does not define you. Practice Self Love, be kind to yourself and make this day special for you. Feel empowered, embrace what makes you you and be proud of all that you are. One moment does not define you, it’s how you react to that moment that does.
I’m so happy to be sharing a movement that’s near and dear to my heart, The Self Love Project. They’re working hard to create curriculum that teaches young girls the value of embracing themselves for all that they are and empowering them to be the change they want to see in the world.
I thought I would share a few questions I was asked by The Self Love Project below, please let me know how you feel about Self Love and how it would benefit today’s society. I would love to read your comments on this subject.
How would your life be different if self love was taught in school?
Growing up I always felt like an outcast. I went to a school (k-8) that was very diverse but I was always the biggest kid in class – no matter what grade I was in. I developed very early on, I didn’t ever console with my mother and it was a scary time for me.
I believe if self love was taught in school, I wouldn’t have grown up to resent the way my body developed. I was looked down on by my peers and developed so many insecurities because I felt ridiculed.
Looking back on it all, I was a weird kid but beautiful nonetheless. I wish I had someone to encourage me to believe in myself and take pride in my appearance. It’s my biggest struggle today.
If you had a daughter, what would you want her to know about self love?
I always worry that when I do decide to have children, that he or she will suffer all the pain this world has to throw at blissful-minded kids, regarding “ideal beauty” falsified by the media.
If I had a daughter, I would affirm that she is beautiful, every single day. I’d rather have an overly confident child than one that feels ashamed. I would want her to hear my story, and understand that I will always be there for her. Most importantly, I would want her to know it’s perfectly okay to be perfectly unique, embracing who she is is key no matter what.
Self love is important to establish at a young age. That’s when you’re most impressionable, so why not encourage a positive outlook towards yourself early on?
How do you express self love?
I express self love by caring for my body, mind and soul on a daily basis. I feed myself nourishing foods, I surround myself with positive, uplifting people and I take time to reflect each and everyday – on my ups and downs.
It’s important to remind yourself that you’re just one person. You do your best everyday to make the most of your time, but it’s okay to stop and listen to what your body wants and needs. Practicing self love can be as simple as indulging in chocolate or meditating for 15 minutes a day. Both are consistent in my life.
